We are having great trouble getting our 1 year old CAG back in her cage.
She is very clever and all my tricks are failing to work. I would be
grateful for any advice as she just refuses to go back in and it is
impossible to catch her sometimes.

I used to towel her and cuddle her and then gently put her back in but she's
got wise to that. She hasn't had her wings clipped and so flies off as soon
as she realises that we are trying to get her back in. We've tried bribing
her with treats and newspaper, but she would rather stay out permanently,
which of course she can't!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

When our TAG Gonzo used to misbehave that way we found a trick that
often worked.

Once he has on a hand (often the hardest part) we would hold our other
hand about 4-6" above him, roughly over his shoulders, all the while
talking to him and gently holding on to one foot between thumb and
forefinger. He was definately uncomfortable with the hand being there
but he wouldn't try to fly off.

Good luck, Barb. Toddlers with wings demand a whole new level of
patience.

If I have any problems it usually is getting him in a travel cage. The trick
is to "back him up" into the cage door so that by the time he realizes what
is happening it is too late. Do not hesitate at the door or he will try to
latch on cage door with beak and wings. Then you have to let go, relax and
try again in a few minutes. When I back him up he is perched on my right
hand index finger, I am holdng his left toe firmly with my thumb and my left
hand is on his back. I am talking to him to distract him and "wham". By the
way, he "enjoys" me holding onto him with my thumb. It gives him mental
security and also he feels comfortable enough to revolve and hang from my
index finger and do tricks.

Sounds like you have been too lenient on your bird and let him roam out of
the cage too much. He should have been disciplined that the cage was home
and outside was a treat. Mine knows "nite nite"time is in his home and not
in his play area.

Thank you both for the advice, I will try it.

Yesterday she was out for hours and although she was good, she would NOT go
back into the cage. Funnily enough I did consider holding her feet but
thought it might be cruel. Also I think she will bite me!

Eventually Milly got tired and sat on the top of her cage and finally went
inside, but I agree that I should be in control because she's a bit of a
"madam"!

Will let you know how I get on.

We've had this problem with our Umbrella Cockatoo.. We back him into is cage
also.. There are times when he grabs on because he knows what's going on
that we take out some of his toys and hand them to him. That way while he's
hold it.. He can't grab onto the cage hehe

Is there anything more that Mr PMD is guilty of?
