I can NEVER EVER get the step up command to work. My grey LOVES to be
pet..he brings his head down and gets scratched all over his body by
anyone..very friendly that way. The MINUTE you try to get him to step
up on something the something gets bitten HARD (usually my hand) or he
jumps of the cage in fright. Any help?

Try this, this is how I get them to step up. take a piece of perch of
identical type to that used in the bird cage. Slowly bring it towards the
middle of the birds chest so that it touches press it gently against the
chest and the birds natural instinct would be to step up, after a few weeks
of this you can start using the command as well and the bird will associate
the command to the action of stepping up. If this fails to work put the bird
on the floor and use the same technique from there, birds hate being at
ground level so instinct cuts in and the bird will try to step up just to
get off the ground.

Good advice below BUT remember that the bird is not trying to hurt you. He
is acting out of self defense. I tell friends who want to put my bird on his
finger that he is full of BS and trying to scare you. This is especially
true if you are new to him. YOU have to be the one in control and forcefully
put your finger from his toes up into his chest. DO NOT WAVER. Do not give
him the chance to try and scare you or be aggressive. Don't act scared and
do not stop in front of him. Also do not try to approach him from any
direction other than straight in front. Be aggressive .. straight forward
and he will give you no problem.

potty training - weve had a grey for about 3 1/2 years now. he was hand reared and knows no fear. Whilst he will on the whole step up and down on command, we have had difficulty potty training him. Whenever he goes now he says good boy but not always in the right..
